I’ve lost track of how many times over the
years I’ve been asked why I commit so much of
my time to preparing for yet another Ironman.
For a long time I found it difficult to come
up with a reasonable response, because often I
wasn’t sure myself. I think what makes it
difficult, is goals change as the years pass

“Ironstruck”. When I first saw this event I
was drawn toward it and made the decision that
I just had to cross that finish line. Despite
the fact that I couldn’t swim a stroke and had
never been on a racing bike I was compelled by
some unseen force to do this race.

Once I consciously made the decision, there
was no turning back and my life took on a new
direction. It was easily the most important
and most life-changing decision I have ever made.
It touched every single aspect of my life.
At 56 years old I don’t plan to do an Ironman
every year from this point on. However I’ve
learned from my long Ironman career how
important maintaining a healthy lifetstyle is
to a persons quality of life.

My plan is to do my next Ironman in my 60th
year. There is no confusion “why” any longer
when I am asked that question yet again.
By setting that goal, I realize that I will
have to stay fit between now and then. It also
means that when that starting gun goes off 4
years from now, I will be going into my 60’s
in absolute peak condition. Most likely among
the fittest 60 year olds in the world. Really
not a bad group to be a part of at that stage
in ones life. How that particular race turns
out really has no bearing on anything. Just
making it there is reward in itself.

I strongly believe that how successful or rich
a person is doesn’t really make a whole lot of
difference when a twist of fate strips it all
away and makes people from all walks of life
materially equal and dependent on their own
physical strength, courage, and adaptibility
in order to survive.

The world is changing and events like 9-11 and
hurricane Katrina are examples of catastrophic
events that knew no boundaries and in an
instant left individuals with nothing but the
ability they possessed within themselves to at
least provide a fighting chance to survive.
Of course it doesn’t mean everyone has to
begin training for the Ironman Triathlon– one
of the most challenging events in the world.
However, to meet the unexpected circumstance
of an ever-changing world, it behooves all of
us to take care of our physical well-being to
the best of our ability. At any age and yes,
even as we settle into the retirement years.
Perhaps the best way to explain what I mean
is an example I used in a previous article.
Twenty years ago, had I found myself in the
middle of a lake, 5 miles from shore with no
lifejacket–I would have drowned in 2 or 3
minutes. Now it would be an opportunity for a
long training swim.

The Ironman has given me that ability and that
confidence. I owe this amazing event so much.

The latest Wimbledon tennis championships are nearly upon us and many people in the British Isles are wondering when and where the next home grown player is going to win the tournament. In this article I look at some of our hopes for this year and the future.

This is the first season in about the last ten when I feel that there is basically no chance of a British born player winning Wimbledon this year. Over the past decade I have really believed that Tim Henman was going to be the man to finally bring glory to our proud nation. For whatever reason he has always seemed to fall a little short,even though in truth he should be very proud of what he has achieved in his tennis career.

There have been at least a couple of times where he possibly should have gone on to win the tournament and this may be one of his regrets when he looks back at a long and successful career. His chances of becoming Wimbledon tennis champion have now all but disappeared.

Tim is currently looking a shadow of his former self and I think that the best he could hope for this year is a place in the quarter finals. Of course there is a slight chance that now that the pressure and expectation is off his shoulders, that he may thrive out there on the court, I certainly hope so.

Greg Rusedski is also in my opinion well past his sell by date. He will also do well to reach the latter stages but has never ever really looked like winning this tournament despite having a game which is well suited to Wimbledon.

The most interesting and exciting of the British hopes is Andrew Murray. Over the last eighteen months Andy has gone from strength to strength and last year he had a brilliant tournament at Wimbledon. In saying all of this I really do not think he has the skills required to win the tournament.

Andrew may well continue to improve and may well be crowned the champion of Wimbledon in the future. While a certain Roger Federer is around it will be very difficult for any player of any nation to win the tournament.

As for the future of British tennis I have heard that Boris Becker has started to help some of our young teenage prospects and many other new ideas are starting to be put into practice.

I feel that the problem is that there are very few courts where people can just turn up to and play. You are able of course to pay at a local tennis club but these prices can be very expensive for a family of four who just want to go and play on the spur of the moment. Most of the kids would much rather go down to the local park to kick a football around. This is a lot easier and is free of course.

If we really want a British champion of Wimbledon in the near future we have to have far more courts accessible to the average man and his family. The tennis clubs themselves could offer free coaching to the under tens to get them interested in the game. These youngsters could then become full members when they reach their teens and could be the future of each club.

Brother Derek has won 5 out of his last seven races, dating back to May of 2005. His most impressive win recently was a 1 length win in the one mile San Rafael at Santa Anita Park in January. In that race, Brother Derek took the lead at the pole and never looked back, fending off a feisty Stevie Wonderboy by 3 lengths. The 2006 Kentucky Derby will the the first derby for trainer Dan Hendricks, who has entered Brother Derek in the Santa Anita Derby on April 8.

First Samurai has also had a very successful year, winning five of his last seven races, and finishing a very competitive second and third in the others. His most recent outing was a 1 1/8 mile race at Gulfstream on March 4. In that race, First Samurai had an adventurous stretch run, finishing second to Corinthian by a neck. However, after review, the stewards disqualified Corinthian and awarded him third.

A potential overlay is Private Vow. Trained by the highly successful Steve Asmussen, Private Vow has had a very mixed series of races. From July to September, 2005, Private Vow won three out of four races, and finished second in the fourth. He inexplicably finished 14th in the BC Juvenile in October, but bounced back with a solid win at Churchill Downs in November. Keep an eye out for this horse in the 2006 kentucky derby although his last race was a disappointing seventh in the tenth race at Oaklawn on March 18, a race run on a fast track and won by Kentucky Derby hopeful Lawyer Ron. His next race is the Arkansas Derby on April 15th. This performance should go a long way towards determining Private Vow’s place in the 2006 Kentucky Derby field.

Lastly, A.P. Warrior is the winner of his last four starts, and five out of his last 7 starts. Trained by Giacomo-trainer John Shirreffs, A.P. Warrior upset favored Bob and John in the San Felipe Stakes in March. He is entered in the April 8 Santa Anita Derby, alongside another 2006 Kentucky Derby hopeful, Brother Derek. His win in the 1 1/16 mile San Felipe Stakes was an impressive one. From post position 3, A.P. Warrior was off the rail early, remained four deep, then bolted to the lead at the top of the stretch, winning by a half length over Point Determined and 2 lengths over Bob and John.
